Feature Review: Bluetooth Technology (ALL)

Bluetooth. Bluetooth technology,* introduced at Comdex, in November of 1999, represents the first integrated system to seamlessly connect desk-bound and mobile computers, mobile phones, and handheld devices, without wires. It supports rapid and secure (encrypted and authenticated) transmission of voice and data, using a globally available frequency range. The transmission occurs at a high speed (faster than ISDN, slower than Ethernet) and incorporates advanced error-correction algorithms for a high degree of reliability.

*The Bluetooth Special Interest Group was founded in 1998 by IBM, Ericsson, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba (
http://www.bluetooth.com). Its purpose is to develop a uniform worldwide standard for personal wireless connectivity. At the time of its formal announcement, one year later, over one thousand manufacturers had ""joined the Bluetooth family."" (http://www.bluetooth.com)

Bluetooth technology is incorporated into a miniature radio, which is built into a microchip. The microchip is manufactured into the circuitry of a wide range of devices, which, by virtue of its presence, provides wireless interaction with any other Bluetooth-enabled device. A single Bluetooth radio can communicate with more than 200 other devices, supporting the intelligent sharing of information.

The potential impact of Bluetooth technology is significant since it will change the fundamental use of each device that incorporates it. For example: * A mobile phone, handheld device, and mobile computer can all instantly and automatically synchronize their separate phonebooks. This allows the user to maintain the phonebook on the computer, which is preferable since it has the most accessible form of input (i.e the keyboard). * Files can be sent, from one Bluetooth device to another, with the same ease associated with a LAN. This means that e-mail and faxes can be sent from a mobile phone, and a mobile phone can be used to connect to the Internet. In fact, a Bluetooth-enabled mobile computer can connect to a LAN without the need for any cables whatsoever. * Handheld devices, which during the course of the day are used to enter appointments, contacts, and to-do lists, can easily share that information with any other Bluetooth-enabled device. Once a connection is established it is maintained, even if the devices are out of the line-of-sight.

The digital publisher will benefit from Bluetooth technology by eliminating the time-consuming and sometimes technically challenging process of transferring digital information from one device to another. One such application is the movement of digital images out of a digital camera and into a computer; another is from a flat-bed scanner to a digital camera, and then to a computer projector. In time, Bluetooth technology will impact on all phases of everyday life, being incorporated into everything from ATM machines to household thermostats.

Productivity Reviews

Virtual PC 3.0 (MAC)

Virtual PC 3.0 is the latest version of this impressive Windows emulator. It provides the Macintosh user with a complete Windows environment in which almost any Windows application can be installed and run. It is of particular use to users who need to run an occasional Windows program, but are primarily Macintosh-based; or those who have a PC at work or at home and need to access PC programs or files from their Macintosh. Digital publishers, who commonly work in a mixed environment, may need to run a particular utility program, which is not available for the Macintosh, or may need to capture Windows screen grabs for publication. They will find Virtual PC 3.0 to be an invaluable aid, especially now that it is AppleScriptable.

We have used Virtual PC since it was first released, and, over the years, it has undergone major improvements. We use it routinely for reviewing certain PC software, for making screen captures, and for running applications that are sometimes needed while working on the Macintosh.

The speed of Virtual PC 3.0 (which is dependent upon the speed of the PowerMacintosh host) is more than adequate for doing a significant amount of sophisticated work. Connectix has done an incredible job, not only of emulating every aspect of the PC environment, but in packaging it in an intelligent and highly useful manner.

The environment is available in various configurations, with either Windows 98 (requires a Macintosh G3), Windows 95, or PC DOS pre-installed. Users also have the option of running Windows NT, DOS, IBM OS/2, and Linux. Users who have the Microsoft software from a previous version of Virtual PC can take advantage of upgrade pricing of only $45.

Among the many features of the program are it full support for Ethernet. Users can access PC Networks, Novell Network, TCP/IP, Microsoft Networking, and Microsoft Remote Access Services. File sharing is also quite easy, supported by drag and drop, copy and paste, shared folder services, and direct reading of compatible files on floppy disks or CD-ROM.

This new version also supports USB devices. Our experience with Virtual PC is that it is very aware of its host Macintosh environment, and can take advantage of almost all available ports and connections. For example, it can share the Macintosh Internet connection, intelligently linking to the settings that it requires (although it can have its own IP address). It can also make use of connected printers, scanners, modems, etc.

Virtual PC appears in a window on the Macintosh desktop, although it can be run in a full-screen mode. It is "virtually" indistinguishable from Windows operating on a dedicated PC.

The Windows 98 version is $179, Windows 95 version is $149, and the PC DOS version is $49.

MicroPoint (MAC/WIN)

MicroPoint is a mouse alternative. Rather than move your hand (and mouse) around the mouse pad surface, the MicroPoint is stationery, only the user's fingers move. This is but one of several reasons why we have used MicroPoint technology for over ten years. We think that MicroPoint is better in many ways. First, the MicroPoint stays put. The user always knows exactly where it is located on the desk, making it easier to find during the repetitive process of moving back and forth between keyboard and input control device. This also reduces fatigue, as well as saves time. Second, the MicroPoint is controlled with only three fingers, allowing the user's hand to rest comfortably on the unit's case. Third, the MicroPoint is a precision instrument, providing six-times the standard dpi resolution (1240 dpi). Fourth, the MicroPoint adjusts to the users' speed...moving quickly across the screen when the user moves quickly, and moving with cross-hair precision when the user moves slowly. Fifth, the MicroPoint field of movement corresponds exactly to every point on the users' screen. Unlike a mouse, it does not have to lifted up and moved to position it in relation to an area of the screen. Sixth, the MicroPoint buttons can be programmed to perform time-saving shortcuts. Seventh, points in the corners of the screen can be programmed to activate certain actions, such as switching between open applications. $79.95

Mozquito Factory 1.2 (MAC/WIN)

Mozquito Factory 1.2 is the world's first XML Authoring Environment designed for XHTML. XHTML is the successor to HTML, incorporating the extensible markup language. Despite all of the frenzy about XML, there are very few shipping products, and even fewer that make XML easy to implement. Mozquito is a link between HTML and XHTML. The technology depends upon a small JavaScript-based application that resides between the HTML server and the user's browser. It processes XHTML tags (those which use the x: prefix) so that fourth generation browsers can properly display them. The Mozquito engine translates Web pages into a Mozquito file that allows current Web browsers to process new tags.

Whereas HTML has changed relatively little throughout the years, XHTML is infinitely changeable, providing unlimited opportunities to the Web designer. Mozquito provides 14 new tags that relate to the additional namespace of tags available in XHTML, called the Forms Markup Language (FML)(XHTML-FML). Users can use the tags either in their own Web editor, or in the Mozquito Factory editor, which is an XHTML authoring environment. The Mozquito Factory editor has the capability to check a document by using the "well-formed" or "valid" button. If errors are detected, they are indicated in the message dialog along the bottom of the page. When the user double-clicks on the validation message, they jump directly to the error location, where they can make the fix.

The new tags provided in XHTML-FML are: <x:toggle>, <x:tg> <x:template>, <x:insert>, <x:prop> <x:radio>, <x:checkbox>, <x:item>, <x:pulldown>, <x:listbox> <x:textinput>, <x:textoutput> <x:calc> <x:hidden>

Additional tags that have been borrowed from HTML 4 are:

<x:forms>, <x:button>, <x:option>, <x:textarea> <x:img> <x:label>

The forms-based capabilities support the creation of a wide range of data collection pages, including polls, questionnaires, surveys, quizzes, tests, order forms, online shops, e-commerce applications, client-side field calculations, and other types of dynamic Web pages.

With Mozquito the author compiles/exports the XHTML file as a stand-alone HTML file. This file incorporates all of the necessary parts of the Mozquito engine. A site visitor who encounters such a page, using a browser with a version level 4 or higher, will not need a plug-in or applet in order to view the page and experience the dynamic features.

According to Stack Overflow, here is how the process works: "In the Mozquito model, the file is converted before being sent to the browser. The unknown tags are not just converted into other tags that the browser can understand, but rather the whole document is converted into JavaScript. This means that the JavaScript Engine within the browser gets to see the document first; the HTML parser which doesn't understand the document is bypassed. The converted file contains not only the document itself but also the Mozquito Engine, the necessary code for the browser to understand new markup languages. Mozquito by itself is actually a browser, but it is very, very small and can only operate in concert with existing browsers." $149

Namo WebEditor 3.0 (WIN )

Namo WebEditor 3.0 is an easy-to-use Web authoring tool that supports full Dynamic HTML and Cascading Style Sheets in a WYSIWYG environment. A simple Web site can be created in minutes.

The program uses DHTML layers on which users can drag page elements and position them exactly where they want them. Tables are made by drawing them with the pencil tool, adding or splitting cells with simple pencil strokes. Cells are merged by using the eraser. Once the cells are drawn, content can be added as simply as using a word processor.

The program's wizards and storyboard tools support the addition of special effects and complex motion sequences. All necessary JavaScript code is generated transparently. The Script Wizard, for example, can be used to create rollovers, animations, drop-down menus, scrolling text, and other effects with absolutely no programming.

A completed site can be maintained using the Site Manager. The user can get precise reports showing any invalid links as well as orphaned pages. The built-in FTP client makes it easy to contact one or more Web servers to upload files. The program incorporates Microsoft SourceSafe support making it practical for teams to work collaboratively. Using SourceSafe, team members check documents in and out, and each transaction is recorded with a revision record. $99

Monaco EZcolor (MAC/WIN)

Monaco EZcolor is a low-cost cross-platform application that can produce custom ICC profiles for a scanner, monitor and printer. The program does not require a measuring instrument, although the MonacoSENSOR colorimeter is an optional accessory. Without the colorimeter, the user can subjectively calibrate the monitor by responding to a series of on-screen adjustments, whereas with the colorimeter, the calibration is automatic. Scanner profiling is just as simple, and merely requires the scanning of a supplied IT8 target, which is automatically compared to a set of reference data in order to generate a profile.

In the MonacoEZcolor system, the printer is profiled with the use of the scanner. First the IT8 Target is printed, from a supplied file, to the color printer. The original reflection IT8 target is taped, in exact position, over the lower half of the printed target. This composite target is scanned again, the target areas are cropped, and their associated values are automatically compared. The result is the generation of a custom ICC profile for the given printer and substrate. $299 for the software only, $498 for the software and MonacoSENSOR bundle.

Transcend Version 2 (WIN )

Transcend Version 2 is considered among the fastest and most effective foreign language translation products available. It can process virtually any kind of document, including e-mail, Web pages, and application-specific files. It is available in versions for English to and from German, French, or Spanish, and for English to Italian or Portuguese. The use of the Web, and the growth of e-commerce, has made language translation an increasingly important function as international business continues to expand.

Of particular interest to digital publishers is the fact that Transcend can translate documents from Interleaf, FrameMaker, PageMaker and QuarkXPress without disturbing document formatting.

The translation process is a one-click function from within supported word processors such as Microsoft Word 97 and WordPerfect 8. Transcend installs a new menu labeled "Translate," containing translation options. The result of a translation is a quality draft version of selected text, the Windows Clipboard contents, or an entire document.

The Transcend functions can be reduced to a toolbar that can overlay a Web browser, e-mail program, or text editor. In a browser, for example, activating the Translate Webpage button produces a translation of the active page, with all graphics and page formatting remaining intact, and all links remaining functional.

The Transcend program can also be used as a standalone program, from which supported file types can be translated directly. In this mode the user selects a filter for each target file that will determine the format in which the file will saved. The user next conducts a vocabulary search to see if there are words in the file that are not contained in the translation dictionary. Words that are not in the dictionary can be added to user-defined dictionaries. The translation begins after the user specifies a name for the translated file. Remember that Transcend produces a draft translation, and that no machine translation method is 100% accurate...some post editing is usually necessary.

The complete list of supported document formats includes: Rich Text Format, MS Word, WordPerfect, Windows Help, WordPerfect v5.1 binary, DOS ASCII, Interleaf ASCII, ANSI, PageMaker, FrameMaker, QuarkXpress, AmiPro, SGML, and HTMLText. Macintosh documents can be translated in ASCII format, or by using a file conversion program, such as MacLinkPlus.

The Transcend software can be installed on a network server, providing multiple users with full translation services, and the capability to share dictionary resources. $495-$795

Translations can be performed directly within Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer using the Web Translator, which is included. The filters can be grouped together and "attached" to another object or group. In addition, "Lenses" can be applied to magnify defined areas for enlargement, producing effects such as insets in technical illustrations. This degree of control is unprecidented.

Web features not only provide highly optimized GIF/JPEG export, but the direct FTP connection to a remote Web server, for posting Web graphics and documents. Canvas documents can be saved directly to the Web, in HTML format, using the "Save to Web" option.

GIF and JPEG export is enhanced with an interface that displays up to four different settings at once, for visual comparison.
