Digital Imaging Reviews

BullZeye 3 (MAC/WIN)
BullZeye 3 is the latest version of this essential digital image batch-processing application. We were very impressed with the initial version (see the complete review at, and this new one improves on an already stellar program.

The beauty of BullZeye is that its basic functions can be learned by anyone in minutes, and in the hands of a professional, can produce dramatically improved image results. The essence of the program is identifying black, white, or gray areas, clicking on them, and letting the program remove the color cast. This new version adds the capability to zoom in on any area, for precise selection, say of the white of a subject's eye. It also now supports the production of black and white and sepia images. New, too is the capability to sharpen the image and reduce noise. An instructive yet brief QuickTime tutorial is available at $149

Database Reviews

EasyCatalog CS2 (MAC/WIN)
EasyCatalog CS2 is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign CS2 that enables the flexible use of database output within the page layout environment. Data can be imported from virtually any source, and with the use of an optional module, from an ODBC database.

The plug-in simplifies the production of complex catalogs, directories, price lists, and other database publications through the use of document templates which are designed as models of how database records are to appear on a page. The user can create any number of templates, and keep them stored for use or modification. The templates can be constructed using any of the typographic and table parameters that are available within InDesign, providing the ultimate degree of design variety.

Data is imported into an EasyCatalog panel into which it can continue to be modified and organized apart from its database origin. This workflow is different from most approaches, and it offers much greater flexibility in the creation of a publication. For example, the user can import data from a number of sources, unlike most database plug-ins. After data is organized to suit the purpose of the publication, such as changing its order, or hiding selected columns, it is dragged and dropped onto a template wherein it immediately takes on the preset appearance. The template can take the form of a text box or a table.

In addition to taking on the predefined typographic parameters, data conforms to user settings defining such things as numeric formats, and the treatment of images, as it is flowed onto the page. Images are automatically resized and aligned according to user specifications.

The placement of database fields is determined by the placement of Field Specifiers, which can be placed in any text box, or in an InDesign table. These are labels that represent field contents, and serve as variables which are replaced with live data from each database record. The user can apply InDesign formatting to them, save them in a library, and use them again and again.

The process is remarkably simple and direct, and belies its inherent power. Although no programming, coding, nor scripting is required, an optional scripting module is available. EasyCatalog, along with its various optional modules (priced separately), provides a complete database publishing solution that is logical, flexible, and most importantly, highly efficient. $1299

FileMaker Pro 8.5 (MAC/WIN)
FileMaker Pro 8.5 adds some dramatic new capabilities that further its preeminent position in the database application marketplace.

The most significant new feature is the FileMaker Web Viewer control. Users can now include real-time content from the Web within any FileMaker layout, providing a new dimension to data gathering, interpretation, and publishing. The Web Viewer supports the display of almost any kind of content that can be viewed in a Web browser. According to FileMaker specifications, these include: "HTML, PDF, QuickTime, Java applets, Flash and SVG charts and PHP charting classes, fillable forms and, on Windows platforms, binary files such as Word or Excel files."

The significance of this capability cannot be overestimated. FileMaker users now have immediate access to up-to-date data that has been published on the Internet, directly from within a FileMaker database, refreshed each time a record is opened, and updated each time that the viewer is reloaded.

The process of adding a Web Viewer, and more than one can be added, is simple. The process involves: 1. From Layout mode the user clicks the Web Viewer button and draws a rectangle representing the area in which the Web content will appear. 2. The user is then prompted for the content that will be contained in the viewer. This can consist of a variety of options, such as: Inserting a fixed URL, which would display a given Web site in all records. Inserting the field containing the URL listed in the record, which would display that particular Web page. Matching data in one or more fields in the database to any of several popular data-driven Web sites, such as Google Search, Google Maps, FedEx Tracker, Wikipedia, and others. Correlating a tracking field with the FedEx Tracker, for example, would display the real-time status of that particular tracking number.

The useful application of Web Viewers is virtually limitless, and relies on the creative imagination of database developers. Since databases are often deployed to novice end-users, developers can now include a Web Viewer window displaying documentation about the application. The documentation can be updated anytime via Web publishing, and can therefore always remain current. A gallery of FileMaker Pro 8.5 Web Viewer applications, which is growing, can be viewed at

Users can also control the content of the Web Viewer by adding navigational controls, such as Go Back, Refresh, and GoTo URL. These functions are easy to add by virtue of another new feature, Layout Object Names. In FileMaker Pro 8.5 users can now assign a unique name to any layout object, and subsequently use it in a script. Scripts can also be assigned to buttons, making it a fairly easy process for users to create a button for users to "Refresh" a Web Viewer window.

Upgrades to FileMaker Pro 8.5 begin at $99.

Fonts/Font Management

Smasher (MAC)
Smasher is a very useful font utility that works in conjunction with a font management application, such as FontAgent Pro 3 or Suitcase Fusion. It performs a number of useful operations, the most significant of which is releasing fonts from old suitcases, so that they can be more flexibly managed, and the user can install only those fonts or font styles that they require. Minimalizing suitcases puts less stress on system resources and simplifies font menus.

The process of "smashing" fonts is very simple. The user can either click the "Add" button, select the "Add Suitcase" option from the File menu, or drag and drop suitcases onto the Smasher listing window. As the fonts are imported, Smasher checks their integrity and eliminates any corrupt files. Clicking on the Smash button, or dragging the fonts to the desktop "smashes" them, creating a new suitcase for use in Mac OS X. The program intelligently keeps the printer font with its matching bitmap screen font.

When suitcases are in the Smasher environment their contents are revealed, and each font can be previewed on-screen. Font properties, including the font format and style, foundry and copyright data, file permissions, etc. are all displayed. Users can opt to work with only the individual fonts that they require.

Users can easily move OS 9 fonts to OS X, and vice versa.

Many system-related problems can be attributed to fonts. In order for Mac OS X to function properly fonts must be activated and cached. When the font cache does not perform correctly it can result in a number of problems, such as incorrect text reflow, incorrectly generated PDF and PostScript files, and application slowdown. Smasher enables the user to clear font caches easily. $49.95

Additions/Extensions Reviews

ColorWasher (MAC/WIN)
ColorWasher is a plugin that is compatible with a variety of image manipulation programs, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Canvas, and many more. The program works on 8 bit or 16 bit RGB images providing a split screen showing the original image on the left, and the modified image on the right. The preview screen can actually be split into a variety of different horizontal and vertical views enabling the user to see the results of various effects. The program's forte is removing an overall colorcasts which it can do either by using the Easy Mode, or by making color adjustments manually, with precise controls over contrast, exposure, highlights/shadows, and saturation. The application is capable of producing dramatically improved image quality quickly, easily, and reliably with the option of applying saved settings repeatedly. $49.95

onOne Software Photoshop Plug-in Suite (MAC/WIN)
The onOne Software Photoshop Plug-in Suite consists of four productivity boosting plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop CS and CS2. The suite consists of Genuine Fractals®, Mask Pro®, Photo Frame Pro®, and Intellihance Pro®.

Genuine Fractals provides the capability to output images at up to 800% enlargement with no image degradation. The user can specify a percentage size enlargement, or a new, increased resolution value. Multiple images can be batch processed.

Mask Pro provides exceptional masking capabilities. The extensive toolset empowers the user to precisely, yet easily, select even delicate image elements for compositing and other image manipulation operations. The program is based on an entirely new masking engine which enables highly sophisticated and complex masking operations that can be applied to image elements such as fine hair strands, smoke, glass, and other semi- and totally transparent objects.

Features in this version include: Color Decontamination which improves the masking of semi-transparent objects; Keep/Drop Highlighting which simplifies the selection of areas that are to be held or deleted; Enhanced Touch-up Tools and Controls to refine mask edges; Real-time Preview; and more. Masking can be a very time-consuming and frustrating process, and can produce disappointing results. Mask Pro is a competent tool for ensuring that a proficient user can produce professional output.

PhotoFrame supports the creation of thousands of image frames and border effects. The package includes a collection of over 4000 high-quality, professionally designed frame files.

Frames can be created from basic shapes, such as polygons, and modified with corner treatments, and other options. Frame edges can be distorted in a variety of ways, with bevels, glows, shadows, and textures. Combinations of effects can be saved in sets, for re-use.

The frame format is non-proprietary, meaning that the user can import frame files from other frame programs, and make their own.

Intellihance Pro is an alternative to the one click "Auto" image optimization option in Adobe Photoshop. This version features a fast and robust artificial intelligence engine which incorporates sophisticated algorithms to intelligently analyze each image and appropriately adjust contrast, brightness, cast removal, descreening, saturation, sharpness and despeckle in a single step.

The software provides the user with preference controls, robust previews, an intelligent light meter, advanced histogram analysis, professional fine-tune controls, and compatibility with the Photoshop Actions Palette, for batch processing.

Although the user can accomplish significant image enhancement with a single click, the preferences option allows complete control over most of the variables that determine whether an image is usable or not.

A series of videos presented by expert Mike Wong demonstrating the use of the plug-ins is available at The suite represents a savings of $320, selling for only $399.95.

TypeFitter 1.0 (MAC)
TypeFitter 1.0 is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign and InCopy. As any skilled typographer knows, it is characterfit, the expert use of space, and attention to detail that determines the quality of a typographic treatment. Even sophisticated page layout applications, such as InDesign, which have precise controls over the fit of characters and overall spacing settings, are dependent, ultimately, on the exercise of human judgment and the use of a trained typographic eye.

TypeFitter provides easy and direct control over hyphenation and justification (H&J) settings that can be applied in small increments to either tighten or expand text to fit comfortably within its assigned space. The process is visual, applied by pressing buttons that are used to "nudge" type to fit a given space while maintaining proper fit. The buttons are used to tighten more, tighten, restore, loosen, and loosen more. The user retains the ultimate decision as to the proper setting of the text.

The application supports the creation of type-fit styles that can be used repeatedly, and can be shared with other TypeFitter users. Styles help to ensure uniformity for a given publication, or that a House Style can be maintained for an organization. First and foremost, styles save valuable production time. Style settings are affected by modifications that the user makes to Word Spacing, Letter Spacing, and Glyph Scaling and Tracking. In each style the user can also set the number of characters that define a widow.

The TypeFitter palette also includes buttons for finding the next overset text box, and the next widow. This is an inexpensive add-on that can positively affect the appearance of all of a digital publisher's typographic output. $59
